Why run the Plain 100?
The first eight years of the Plain 100 there were only four finishers! In time folks figured out how to manage themselves on our course. Approximately 50% now finish.
In Ultra running circles, the Plain Endurance Runs are singularly unique. Plain isn’t just the name of a town in Eastern Washington, it describes this race itself. Plain and simple; it’s you and you alone against the course. You receive no aid in the form of; pacers, course markings or aid stations. Our volunteers staff checkpoints but, it’s Plain, they leave you to your own abilities. It’s like climbing Mt. Everest without the aid of supplemental oxygen. Hence our motto, “The Plain Endurance Runs are just Plain tough”. If you’re looking for the ultimate challenge you’ve come to the right place.
For those of you that want the Plain experience but don’t want the full meal deal, we have an entrée for you; the Plain 100K, one loop instead of two.

CRITICAL UPDATE: Plain 100 Cancellation & 2027 Rollover Details
An important message for all of you who are part of the Plain 100 community.
Canceling a race is always a hard and sad thing to do as a Race Director. However, it is important to face facts as early as practical when a forest fire forces the situation.
Lightning started the Little Giant fire in the mountains northwest of the course. It has steadily burned southeast onto our route and continues to grow in that direction. Yesterday, the Forest Service issued a closure order that includes many of the trails on the course and the checkpoint access roads. Because this closure order will remain in place "until the snow flies," there is no chance we can hold even a modified version of the race this year.
We are deeply concerned for everyone living in the Plain community and surrounding areas affected by this fire. We understand this cancellation impacts our runners, volunteers, and local partners, and we are incredibly grateful for your understanding. Plain prides itself on being a small-town, non-commercialized race that challenges runners with more difficulty than almost any other ultra event. We will be back next year to continue delivering that same standard.
What to Expect & Next Steps:
2027 Rollover: All currently registered runners will receive a rollover discount for the 2027 event. If 2026 operating costs (permits, insurance, etc.) remain stable, there should be no additional fee for you to race in 2027.
Alternative Options: If racing in 2027 is not an option for you, please reply to this email directly so we can discuss possible alternatives.
Timeline: Expect an email and/or Facebook post in late September when the 2027 race opens for registration. This will include specific instructions on how to apply your rollover discount.
A Note of Gratitude
We want to deeply thank the volunteers who work tirelessly all year long—not just on race weekend. In the last month alone, multiple people dedicated over 100 hours scouting and logging out miles of trails and roads (clearing hundreds and hundreds of trees) to prep for this event. Thank you for your incredible dedication.
We are gladdened by your outpouring of support. We are shifting our focus immediately to planning for 2027 to make next year an unforgettable race.
